Power system automation involves suitable integration of IT with Instrumentation & Control system, Communication protocols & communication methods to perform automatic decision making and control of the power system. Power system automation includes processes associated with generation, transmission and delivery of power. The processes primarily includes data acquisition, power system status monitoring and power system control all working together in a coordinated automatic fashion. The commands are generated automatically and then transmitted in the same fashion as operator initiated commands.
The term “power system” refers the collection of devices that create the overall physical systems that generate, transmit, and distribute power. The term “instrumentation and control (I&C) system” refers to the collection of Intelligent Electronic devices that monitor, control, and protect the power system.
